Known as the "Viennese Nightingale," soprano Rita Streich (1920-1987) was beloved for her beautiful voice. She has a German father and a Russian mother, and seems to have been able to speak German and Russian freely from an early age. Her debut as an opera singer was Zerbinetta in "Ariadne of Naxos," and since then she has been known for her coloratura and her wonderful singing of R. Strauss, Mozart, and other lovely folk songs.
