Leon McCauley is a mid-career British pianist who won the first prize at the Beethoven International Piano Competition in 1993 and the second prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition the same year, making him a world-class pianist. He has a wide repertoire of works by Schumann and other Romantic composers, as well as piano works by Barber, but this album is a collection of works by Schubert. The program centers around the "Wanderer Fantasy" and the "Three Pieces," which have the dark beauty of Schubert's late works, and is accompanied by five songs arranged by Liszt for solo piano.
