First released in March 1992 as a 7-disc set in Japan only, it was later reissued as an encore pressing in 1995, followed by an 8-disc US release of the complete Miles Davis box set "Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel 1965" that ran longer than the 7-disc set. Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel 1965".

The contents of this box set include performances at Chicago's Plugged Nickel club on December 22, 1965 for the first through third sets and December 23, 1965 for the first through fourth sets. The members are Wayne Shorter (ts), Herbie Hancock (p), Ron Carter (b), and Tony Williams (ds), all of whom were known as the "Golden Quintet.
At the time, free jazz was emerging as a new trend in the jazz scene, so the younger members of the band, except for Miles, began to play more free jazz-oriented music on stage after Miles' solo, and returned to their normal playing when Miles started to play again. The result is the ultimate document of 39 songs of highly tense live performance.
Chronologically speaking, this is the first live recording "Miles in Berlin" (recorded in September 1964) and the first studio recording "E.S.P." (recorded in January 1965) after Wayne Shorter joined and became a member of this quintet. It is also a valuable record that serves as a bridge to the second studio recording, "Miles Smiles" (October 1966), which followed.

Regarding the reissue:
The original analog master in the best condition in existence, stored overseas, was used (the master from the US CD production, which is almost the same content, is still missing).
The mastering was done using the above analog master digitized to 192KHz/24bit and converted to DSD, realizing the world's first SACD hybridization.
The CD layer also uses the latest remastered sound source.
Mastering engineers: Koji Suzuki and Kaoru Ishibashi (Sony Music Studio)

What is SACD (Super Audio CD)?
SACD (Super Audio CD) is a 12cm optical disc, the same size as a CD, that was introduced in 1999 as a high quality audio media using 2.8MHz DSD. SACD has a capacity of 4.7 GB, about seven times that of a CD. This capacity allows you to enjoy music with high sound quality that is extremely close to the original master intended by the artist or producer. Hybrid discs can be played on ordinary CD players.
