This is a collection of cello exercises by Jean-Louis Dupaul and Batançon, by cellist Martin Rummel, who has recorded many etudes for the cello, and who conveys their musical appeal not only to cello students but to the general listener as well. Dupaul's "Essay on the Fingering and Bowing of the Cello" (1806) is an important work that is still regarded as the foundation of cello fingering to this day, and the "21 Exercises" are practical etudes from that work. The musical clarity, humility, and beauty of each piece are unmatched by any other etude. Batanchon was a 19th century virtuoso who taught at the Paris Conservatory, and his Op.25 etude is considered the best pedagogical work ever written for the cello. The comparison of the two etudes will provide an insight into the development of cello technique from the 18th to 19th centuries. Tokyo M-Plus
