Sony Classical will release a series of opera films featuring Jonas Kaufmann from March through July 2016. Following Verdi: La Forza del Destino at the Bavarian State Opera, the second release is a double bill of Cavalleria Rusticana and The Clown, which made a big splash at the Salzburg Easter Festival in 2015. The two operas are two of the greatest Italian verismo operas of the 19th and 20th centuries, and although they are often performed simultaneously in a single evening, it is relatively rare for a tenor to sing the leading roles of both, Tridow and Canio. Kaufmann sang the lead roles of both songs for the first time at the Salzburg Easter Festival, which led to a worldwide battle for tickets.His impassioned singing is of course superb, and he has been praised as "a personal triumph for Kaufman in his debut in this double role" (Sunday Times), "Kaufman in top form in two roles" (Daily Telegraph), "truly world class" (Courier), "the supreme Kaufman" (South German Newspaper), and "the best of the best" (South German Newspaper). The Santuzza Ljubljana The rest of the cast, including Lyudmila Monastirska as Santuzza, Ambrogio Maestri as Alfio, Maria Agresta as Nedda, Dimitri Platanias as Tonio, and many others, is made up of singers active in Europe and the United States, and the right people in the right places. The Staatskapelle Dresden, conducted by Christian Thielemann, a rarity outside of the German repertoire, also demonstrated its innate sense of theater, enveloping the singers with a truly profound sound, and was praised as "the Dresden musicians have surpassed the previous year's performance with their golden sound.Filmmaker and opera house director Philippe Stelzel's direction uses video projection of old black-and-white films to create a truly effective atmosphere.
