Verdi's opera "La Forza del Destino" newly staged at the Bavarian State Opera in December 2013. Verdi's opera "La Forza del Destino" was first performed at the Mariinsky Theatre in 1862, and a revised version was premiered at La Scala in Milan in 1869. This new production at the Bavarian State Opera, produced to commemorate the bicentennial of Verdi's birth, combines the two in the Verfull version. The production by Martin Kuschei, an up-and-coming Austrian theater director with experience at the Burgtheater and elsewhere, uses modern costumes and settings to bring Verdi's somewhat old-fashioned opera vividly to life in the modern age. The singers are Anja Harteros, a soprano with a beautiful stage figure and a powerful voice, and Jonas Kaufmann, a tenor with an unshakeable international popularity.Both Kaufman and Halteroth are at the top of their game" (The Times), and "it is hard to imagine a better, more grand opera performance" (Die Welt). Conductor Asher Fisch brings these two worlds together beautifully. Although the production includes a contemporary and partly extreme murder scene, it is a highly concentrated stage performance in the style of a suspense drama that emphasizes the seriousness of the work.
