The King's Singers, a vocal group formed in 1968 by six members, mostly students of King's College. Since then, the group has changed members over the past 40 years, and is still active today as a long-lived ensemble. Their repertoire is wide-ranging and includes everything from Renaissance works to contemporary commissioned works and the Beatles. This video is an interesting program from a TV series produced in the 1980s that traces the history of the "madrigal = the most sophisticated form of secular choral music," which originated in 16th century Italy. The program introduces the members of the King's Singers at that time and shows how this song of love and joie de vivre went through various European countries...Germany, France, and Spain before reaching England around 1580, and how it changed over time through performances. In Program 1, the origins of the group will be told in a one-hour documentary, and a 30-minute introduction to the madrigals of each country will follow. The tour begins in the Loire Valley, passing through the countryside of the Danube River basin, with beautiful patios in Spain, and reminiscing about Byrd and Dowland.
