Description:
The strong relationship between conductor Varlav Neumann (1920-1995) and the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra over the past 20 years has resulted in many great performances and has built the orchestra's international reputation. Born in Prague, Neumann first studied viola at the Prague Conservatory and conducting with Václav Thárlich, and in 1945 he became a viola player with the Czech Philharmonic, the same year his string quartet made its official debut as the "Smetana Quartet. In 1947, when Kubelik suddenly became ill, he made his conducting debut as a substitute conductor, and left the string quartet to pursue a career as a conductor. You know what he has been doing since then. In particular, he has shown a deep attachment to his own country's works and to Mahler, and is known for his sympathetic playing. The two works by Dvořák (1841-1904) and Janáček (1854-1928) recorded here in 1986 are also full of power and masterful performances, and the good relationship between the conductor and orchestra is evident in these wonderful performances.Special features include a march and polka collection by Julius Fuciuk, known for his "Entrance of the Swordsman".
