This 21st Century Guitar Music SACD hybrid disc features works by five Finnish composers and the Chinese Tan Dun. Finland's Ismo Eskelinen (1971-) is known for his unique albums recorded mainly for the Alba label, including The Magic Circle (ABCD 153), which plays 20th century Spanish guitar music, and The Seventh Sense (ABCD 213), a collection of contemporary works. His new album, "Chromos," features works by five Finnish composers and the Chinese Tan Dun. Fagerlund's "Chromos" was inspired by the "activity" of the sun's chromatic layer. Kalevi Aho, who had been asked by Eskelinen to write a solo piece, was inspired by listening to a record by legendary Iraqi oud player Munir Bashir, who wrote "Solo XI. Composer" Mustonen's three-movement "Guitar Sonata No. 2" in "Dramatico, con rubato," "Mysterioso, con rubato," and "Con forco. Tan Dun's "Seven Desires" was created as a "musical mini-drama" to accompany his Guitar Concerto No. 2 "Yi2.The "modernist" Jukka Tiensu created "Daydreams" in a sound world of "fairy tale colors" using irregularly tuned guitars and electronics. Eskelinen's arrangement of "Psalms," a piano piece written by Timo Aracoitila that "ends peacefully with meditative chords," is performed. King International
