A very challenging Brahms performance that dispels the bold portamento and tempo fluctuations familiar common sense and searches for lost time, the brilliant violinist, conductor, educator, and scholar Johannes Lehltovar is a master of the Brahms symphonies and concertos. He conducted all of Brahms' symphonies and concertos for four years while researching the nature of performance in the 18th and 19th centuries, and in January 2023, he published his dissertation on Brahms' orchestral performance and received his doctorate from Leiden University. He received his doctorate from Leiden University in January 2023, and recorded this collection of violin sonatas at the same time. As a result of intensive Brahms research, this recording incorporates many ancient playing techniques that have long since been lost. Particularly daring are the use of portamento and flexibility of tempo. In the methods of Spohr and Joachim, portamento was the most important and rudimentary means of expression for violinists, while vibrato was merely decorative. Brahms himself said that "there is no connection between a mechanical metronome and the music in one's own flesh and blood," and that "a sane musician would take a different tempo for each performance," suggesting that he was far more flexible in setting tempo than is the case today.Incorporating the results of various studies into actual performances is a very challenging task, as it involves creating music that has never been heard before.
