In recent years, a great deal of research has been published on composers active between the mid-19th century and the First World War. Characteristically, composers who left works in so-called "absolute music," which is music that tries to express itself rather than music that tries to express itself by means of title music, and in dramatic music are conspicuous. Philippe Chalwenka is one such composer, and this album brings together his major chamber works. The masterpieces are clear, lengthy, and lyrical, and they skillfully incorporate all the expressive techniques that have been cultivated over the years. The music is compact and fluid in form, but also shows a variety of experimentation, including the use of slightly unusual tonalities.
