Since its inception in 1976, when the first punk movement was brewing, Wyer has distanced itself from its peers and sources of influence, engaging in a subversive and conceptual approach to making music. This ever-exploring approach has permeated Wyer's songwriting, onstage expression, and even their decisions since the 1980s, when Robert Gray shaved the drum kit down to just bass drum, snare, and hi-hat. It has served to successfully protect them from repetition and clichés of the same thing. In this context, their last album, the aptly titled "Change Becomes Us," was one case of "anticipating the unexpected." With that album, the group has largely reclaimed the rich stock of material that was discarded during their temporary breakup in the early 80s. Their thirteenth studio album, simply titled Wyre, consists of material composed with the album in mind. The songs were introduced by Colin Newman to the band members in the studio just prior to recording. The idea was to elicit the most natural response possible from the musicians.Far from the broad finish one might expect from such an approach, however, "Wyer" is filled with enchanting melodies with a '60s tinge and rhythms with an overwhelming, almost motoric vigor. The melodic inflections, guitar and bass motifs, and drum rhythms born of Wyer's distinctive vocabulary are recognizable, yet surprisingly fresh.
