Rees, a farmer's daughter, and Chorus, a young farmer, are lovers. This morning, Leeds is hanging a pink ribbon on a tree for her meeting with him. But then comes Leeds' mother, Simone. She wants Lise to marry Alain, the son of a wealthy farmer. Leeds plans to keep her love with Chorus, and Simone tries to stop her. Alain and Thomas, along with their friends who support them, join in the turmoil... The ballet "La fille mal garde" was first performed in France in 1789 and is popularly known in Japan as "The Marriage of Lise. Although the choreography by Dauberval (1742-1806) for the first performance in 1789 is now lost, Ashton's choreography is commonly performed today, and the Royal Ballet's performance is considered exceptional.Dancing Leeds in this 2015 revival is the famous Prima Natalya Osipova. Her "cheerful and energetic tomboy Leeds" was highly acclaimed. The dancers surrounding her are all talented performers. McCray played the mischievous and good-natured chorus; Moseley played the "causal Simone," a role customarily reserved for men; and Paul Kaye played Alain, who loved his red umbrella more than women.
