This is a collection of works for cello that were popular in 19th century Russia. Tchaikovsky was a great admirer of the deep sound of the cello, and his orchestral works and ballets sometimes feature beautiful solo cello scenes. The "Variations on a Rococo Theme" is a work in which the cello plays its part to the hilt, as it does in some of the orchestral works and ballets. Dedicated to the Moscow Conservatory cellist Fitzhenhagen, it is performed here in its original piano and cello version, although it is now often performed in the version he revised. Other works include technical pieces by Davidoff, a cello virtuoso, and elegant pieces by Lyadov, Arensky, and Rimsky=Korsakov. Naxos Japan
