Description:
Rafe Vaughan Williams (1872-1958), one of the great composers who laid the foundation of modern British music. A lifelong friend of Holst and an admirer of Sibelius to whom he dedicated his own Fifth Symphony, many of his works have a melancholy and mysterious atmosphere with a gentle, gentle sound reminiscent of the countryside. The "Sorrento Strait," composed when Williams was 30 years old, features a similar landscape to the "Sea Symphony," also conceived around the same time. Other pieces include "Suite for Piano," presumably written for educational purposes, "Fantasy," also written in his early years and later reworked, and "Aged Lark," the most famous romance of his works. This is a suitable disc for an introduction to British music. (C)RS
