Description:
This is a satirical comedy directed by René Clair. While René Clair is best known for comedies such as *Le Million* (1931) and *Liberté pour nous* (1931), *The Last Millionaire* is also an extremely irreverent and entertaining comedy. The story is set in the small city-state of Casinario. The premise—a country sustained by casino revenues—is somewhat reminiscent of Monaco. When the country falls into a financial crisis, the queen attempts to marry her granddaughter to Mr. Banco, a Casinario who has become a wealthy man abroad, hoping to use his fortune to pull the nation out of its economic crisis. Welcomed like a triumphant general, Mr. Banco accidentally hits his head, loses his memory of the past, and begins issuing bizarre orders. For example, he makes his subjects dress up as dogs or forces those with beards to wear knee-length shorts… The leaps in humor are delightful. The fact that it functions more as a satire of human nature than of politics is where the brilliance of René Clair’s lighthearted and free imagination lies. Added to this is a unique elegance—something truly characteristic of René Clair. This elegant nonsense is a rare treasure.
