Mahler (1860-1911)
Description:
Walter & New York Philharmonic's Carnegie Hall Live, this time with Mahler. The "Ode to the Earth" with Kathleen Ferrier was recorded in 1948 and released for the first time in Japan! The 60th anniversary of Bruno Walter's death is being planned by the Epitagraph label. After releasing Mozart ("Nos. 25, 29, 35, 38, 39" EPITA.020/1 and "Nos. 40, 35, 39" EPITA.025) and Brahms (complete symphonies EPITA.022/4), this time it's Mahler! Walter, who has left behind many masterpieces with his direct interpretation of Mahler, has left behind three symphonies on three discs: Symphony No. 1 "Giant," No. 2 "Resurrection," and "Song of the Earth," which he recorded live at Carnegie Hall with the New York Philharmonic at the height of his career. Although "Giant" was previously released on LP (K22C-181, Seven Seas label) by King Records, this is the first CD release in Japan, and "Resurrection" and "Songs of the Earth" are the first recordings in Japan. Giant" - Live performance on February 12, 1950. This is Walter's first postwar subscription performance of his favorite piece with the New York Philharmonic. The conclusion of the first movement and the finale are vivid and powerful, and the performance is at its best! The melody is rich in romantic song, and the virtuosity of the orchestral players shines through, including the cellos in the second movement and the woodwinds in the third movement.Resurrection" - Live on February 17, 1957, the day before the session recording for CBS (the final session of this studio recording was carried over to one year later). This is a passionate live performance filled with intense spirit and energy, and the scale of the performance is huge. The sound quality is as vivid as that of conventional international CDs. Maureen Forrester, a young Canadian singer at the time, was selected to take lessons at Walter's home, and it is well known that this concert was the catalyst for her rise to fame as a Mahler singer. Songs of the Earth" - Live performance at Carnegie Hall on January 18, 1948, with Kathleen Ferrier, a famous alto of unparalleled renown. Walter, who had first performed with her at the Edinburgh Festival the previous year (1947), invited her to perform at the Carnegie in 1948, leading to the famous DECCA recording with the Vienna Philharmonic in 1952. Bernstein heard the broadcast of this Sunday concert on the radio in his car on the way to Boston, and later (on the 22nd) told Walter, "It was one of my great musical experiences. You are a very, very great maestro" (Bruno Walter: The Man Who Saw Paradise in Music, written by Eric Riding & Rebecca Petuchowsky, translated by Yoshiya Takahashi, published by Ongaku no Tomo Sha in 2015). The sound quality is crisper than that of the previous foreign recordings, and although there is some scratch noise associated with the reissue of the original recording, the high frequencies are not degraded and the sound is full of realism. The deep and rich voice of Ferrier's voice comes through even more clearly and emotionally. There is no interruption of sound between the movements from the beginning to the end of the song, and the applause at the end of the song gives the audience a great sense of realism! The sound quality is relatively good, including the extension of the high frequency range and the heaviness of the low frequency range, and it will be released on UHQCD, the "definitive high sound quality CD". This 3-CD set of Mahler's live performances at the peak of his career is a must-have and much-anticipated set for fans of Mahler interpretation. King International
