Description:
When considering the solo works to be included on this album, Gerstein says that he chose the pieces that would be appropriate for the 150th anniversary of his birth, covering his early and late works, with his masterpiece from the middle period, the Piano Concerto No. 2, as the core. First, "Melody" from the Fantastic Pieces, a masterpiece from his early period that is reminiscent of post-Tchaikovsky. Then, two pieces related to Fritz Kreisler, a violinist representing the first half of the 20th century who was a very close friend. The first is a piano arrangement by Rachmaninoff of Kreisler's masterpiece "The Sorrows of Love" and the second is "Variations on a Theme by Corelli," which was dedicated to Kreisler. The final piece is a piano arrangement by Gerstein of the third song "In the Silence of the Night" from the song "Six Songs". These solo works were specially recorded in the Great Hall of the Philharmonic in Berlin, where the sound is beautifully captured right down to the fading pianissimo. Cover photo by Thomas Struth
