Matmos, the brilliant electronic music duo known for their collaboration with Bjork, has joined the Smithsonian Folkways catalog! The "Return to Archive" is released from Smithsonian Folkways, a well-known music label affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution, and was founded in 1948 by Moses Ashe, founder of Folkways Records, the predecessor of Smithsonian Folkways. Moses Ashe, founder of Folkways Records, the predecessor to Smithsonian Folkways, established Folkways Records with the mission of recording the sounds that live and breathe all over the world. From the croaking of frogs in North America to the sounds of laryngectomies, Folkways has hundreds of LPs produced by field recordists, scientists, and experimenters who explore the limits of the human soundscape. Now, more than 70 years after the founding of Folkways, Return to Archive, a work assembled through non-music by the electronic music duo: Matmos, joins its catalog. Various sounds such as dolphins, Japanese beetles, telephones, human voices pushing the limits of vocal cords, and shortwave radios are mixed together in a fantastical track that mixes the ordinary with the extraordinary.
