Description:
The Viola Bastarda is often mentioned in Italian historical documents from the 16th to the 17th century. This was not the name of a specific stringed instrument, but rather an expression referring to a special performance technique. The technique of playing polyphonic vocal music with only one instrument, moving freely between all parts, is called the "Bastarda method," and musicians who skillfully performed it on viola da gamba were called "masters of viola bastarda" (the young Monteverdi was one of them). Manon Papaserzio, whose parents are Elsa Frank and Jeremy Papaserzio, both of whom are highly respected for their research and performance of double reed instruments prior to the Baroque era, is here to recreate the musical practices of the olden days by reading various polyphonic pieces in the Bastarda style and playing with a sense of improvisational wit in a very natural sound delivery. He recreates the musical practices of days gone by with his performance. The program is also a delightful example of multiple examples of different instrumental arrangements of common original songs and fixed melodies, presenting the arranger's ingenious arrangements and the diversity of Bastardic interpretations in an easy-to-understand manner.The ensemble is exquisite, with a reliable cast that includes Angelique Moillon, who conveys the charm of the harp, an ancient instrument dating back to the Middle Ages, and Yoann Moulin, a keyboardist who is highly regarded as a soloist and interpreter of pre-Baroque works.
