Composer David Maslanka was born in Massachusetts, USA. He has composed in a variety of genres, including orchestral, vocal, chamber, and wind music, but it is his series of works for wind band that have made him a household name. The four works on this album, "California," "Angel of Mercy," and "St. Francis," are practically symphonic poems, weaving endless expansive landscapes and unrestrained drama into the music. Alex and the Phantom Band" is like "Peter and the Wolf," with a humorous plot that introduces the various instruments used in a brass band one after another.
