Giulio Bricciardi was one of the most respected flutists in 19th century Italy. He received his first flute lessons from his father and graduated from the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia at the age of 15. He gave flute lessons in Rome and Naples while performing and writing works for the flute. It is said that he was so virtuosic that he was called the "Paganini of the Flute," and his works are littered with dazzling virtuosity and immensely effective performances. His masterpiece is "The Carnival of Venice," and the way the familiar melody is freely embellished each time it is repeated is truly a sight to behold. The other works are basically in the form of variations on well-known melodies to which ornaments are added, and Carbotta, who specializes in 19th century works, offers a performance in which one can enjoy the shimmering tone of the flute.
