Baba Ali is a London musician who maps Nigerian music, no-wave, New York hip-hop, Berlin techno, London punk, and many others. His debut album, Memory Devices, was released on Memphis Industry. The debut album is a culmination of previous influences and experiences, but no artist has mapped them as vividly as Baba Ali has done on Memory Device. Drawing from his Nigerian heritage, his no-wave adolescence, the hip-hop of New York's Hot 97, Berlin's techno scene, and the punk spirit of London, where he is now based, Memory Device is a fascinating introduction to a musician who defies categorization. It serves as an introduction.Baba Ali began writing songs as a solo artist after moving to London, where he released his debut EP, Nomad, in 2017. She then met British guitarist Nik Balchin, and the result of her collaboration with him was the 2020 EP This House.A mixtape, Rethinking Sensual Pleasure, was also released in the same year. Memory Device, written during the lockdown and recorded in East London by Al Doyle (LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip), was the follow-up.
