A must for Mahler fans and arrangers! A beautiful chamber arrangement of Mahler's Symphony No. 4 by Erwin Stein (1885-1958), a student of Schoenberg's. The Verein fur musikalische Privatauffuhrungen (Private Performance Society), a musical organization founded by Schoenberg in Vienna at the beginning of the 20th century, arranged orchestral works by Mahler and Bruckner for chamber music, which were enjoyed by music lovers. The Private Performing Society (Verein fur musikalische Privatauffuhrungen), a musical organization founded by Schoenberg in Vienna at the beginning of the 20th century, arranged orchestral works by Mahler and Bruckner into chamber music for the enjoyment of music lovers. Erwin Stein, a friend and student of Schoenberg, was an Austrian composer who helped found the Private Performance Society and prepared various arrangements for the organization. The arrangement of the chamber version of Symphony No. 4 on this album was made in 1921 and features woodwinds, string quintet, percussion, harmonium, and piano. At the time, it was difficult to perform Mahler's symphonies, which were large in scale and required special instruments, due to cost considerations, so arranging them for smaller instruments was very important. Today, they are invaluable in providing new insights into the works.This performance shows the skill of Stein's arrangement, which does not distort the musical message of the original.
