December 27-28, 2023/Cembalo (Château de l'Assas) (CD) 80' Louis Marchand was a French composer representative of the Louis XIV era. Born the son of an organist, he was appointed organist of the Royal Chapel. As a teacher, he was very popular among the nobility, but he also had problems with violence and a violent temperament, and was deported by Louis XIV. He was also said to have competed with J.S. Bach for the position of cantor after arriving in Dresden, but Marchand is said to have escaped after hearing Bach play behind the curtains. Both organ and harpsichord will be played by Marchand. The organ was built between 1772 and 1774 by Jean-Esprit Isnard with the help of his nephew Joseph Isnard. Although the organ was restored in 2018, modern organ builders are said to be astonished by its pipe mechanism. Legend has it that during the French Revolution, a monk played "Marseillaise" and other songs so beautifully on this organ that he escaped having his pipes taken away.The harpsichord of the Castle of Dassas (Assas) is a miraculous instrument that is both precise and sensationally powerful, and was a favorite of Scott Ross. Arakelian was born in Avignon. He was trained under such distinguished professors as Pascal Marceau, Olivier Latry, Michel Bouvard, Olivier Beaumont, and Blandine Lannoux. He is also the organist at the church of St. Maximin la Sainte-Baume. (King International)
