Description:

Beulah Bartók:. Included in the program. Concerto for Orchestra Sz.116 Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Raphael Kubelik(Conductor) *Recording: 1958 Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta, Sz.106 Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Herbert von Karajan (Conductor) Recorded in 1960 Contrasts for Violin, Clarinet and Piano, Sz.111 Joseph Szigeti (Violin) Benny Goodman (Clarinet) Beulah Bartok (Piano) *Recording: 1940 Diapason, a French magazine specializing in world-class classical music, has selected the most famous and historic performances of the greatest works in the history of music and reissued them with new mastering in the series "Les Indispensables de Diapason ~ Diapason's Choice of the Definitive Works". Volume 173 of the series features the orchestral works of Bartók, a Hungarian composer who was also a concert pianist and ethnomusicologist. In 1943, Koussevitzky, then music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, commissioned Bartók to compose his late masterpiece "Concerto for Orchestra" to commemorate his 20th anniversary as music director and in memory of his late wife Natalya. The recording by Kubelík & the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra from 1958 was selected for this album from among many recordings. The coupling of "Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta, Sz. 106," one of the first recordings by Karajan & the Berlin Philharmonic and commissioned for the 10th anniversary concert of the Basel Chamber Orchestra, led by Paul Sacher, was made in 1960, and "Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta, Sz. 106," also commissioned by Benny Goodman, the "King of Swing," was made in 1961. The "Contrasts for Violin, Clarinet and Piano, Sz.111" was composed at the request of Benny Goodman, who is also known as the "King of Swing. Moreover, the recording combines Bartók's own piano performance with a splendid collaboration of the renowned Hungarian violinist Joseph Szigeti and Benny Goodman on clarinet.
