Antoine Tamestit is one of the best viola players of his generation. He has won the first prize at the Munich Music Competition, and is one of the world's top-class viola players. Bach: Sonatas for Viola [da gamba] and Harpsichord" (HMM902259/ The scope of his activities and repertoire are endless. This album features two sonatas by Brahms, a viola arrangement of a song, and two songs in a rare arrangement with an obbligato viola and piano, which is said to be the closest to the human voice. In his later years, Brahms was influenced by the famous clarinetist Richard Mühlfeldt, and wrote a series of masterpieces for clarinet. Among them, the two clarinet sonatas composed in 1894 were his last sonatas, and he arranged them for viola as well.Tammesti sings the passionate No. 1 and the melancholy melody of No. 2 with rich flavor, and Tiberghien's graceful performance on an 1899 Bechstein beautifully portrays the state of Brahms's later years. Then there are the "Two Songs" sung by Matthias Goerne. In the first song, "Quenched Longing," on a poem by Rückert, the viola also expresses the singer's feelings together, and Tamestit's introspective beauty and Guerne's heartfelt singing are a must-hear.
