A collection of R. Strauss' works that Gould loved so much. Three previously unreleased songs from the legendary 1966 session with Schwarzkopf and a rare rehearsal of Gould singing while playing "Bulleske" on the piano are included. ◆Gould was fascinated by the music of R. Strauss throughout his life, producing the CBCTV program "Richard Strauss--A Personal View" in 1962, as well as "Glenn Gould in Conversation" with Humphrey Burton in 1966. In 1966, he wrote a chapter on R. Strauss along with Bach, Beethoven, and Schoenberg in the four-part "Conversations with Glenn Gould" with Humphrey Burton. In 1961, he made a rare recording for Sony Classical of "Inoch Arden," a narrative and piano accompaniment to a play by Tennyson, and the last recording of his life was a piano sonata written by a young R. Strauss (recorded in 1982).This album is a collection of Gould's performances that could be called a tribute to R. Strauss, and not only is "Burleske," for which he made no official session recordings for Sony Classical, reissued from CBC sources, but it also includes three pieces that have never been released in any form before. A rehearsal of "Bulleske" at his home around 1955 shows Gould immersed in the work while playing the orchestral parts on the piano and singing, while a 1966 session with Elisabet Schwarzkopf of the never-completed In addition to the previously released "Ofelia Lieder," three songs from the 1966 song cycle session with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, which was never completed, are included for the first time on this release.
