Composer/singer/songwriter Gabriel Kahane has written a new piano concerto, "Heirloom," for his father, world-renowned pianist Jeffrey Kahane. The work will be performed by the innovative New York-based chamber orchestra The Knights, conducted by its Co-Artistic Director Eric Jacobsen, and released by Nonesuch Records.
Gabriel Kahane, born in 1981 in California, is a singer-songwriter. She creates a unique world by blending contemporary folk-pop with classically inspired music. Praised by the New York Times for his "luxurious calm and emotional intelligence," he has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the Kronos Quartet, and other classical musicians, playing alternative pop with an acoustic sound that floats along, Recently, he has also been composing music for musicals.
Pianist and father Jeffrey Kahane was born in Los Angeles in 1956, won the 1983 Rubinstein Competition as a pianist, and has been active as a conductor since 1988. In 2001, he assumed the post of Music Director. He is known for his "playing and conducting" style, in which he conducts while playing the piano. The repertoire ranges from Baroque and Classical music of Bach and Mozart to Gershwin and even contemporary music. His versatility and intellectual approach have captivated audiences around the world.
