The Bill Charlap Trio, widely regarded as the pinnacle of traditional jazz pianists and active primarily in New York for many years, has released a new album on Blue Note—their first in three years. This album is a live recording of a performance at New York’s Village Vanguard. It marks the trio’s first live release in 14 years, since 2007. Featuring the trio’s longtime regulars, Peter Washington (b) and Kenny Washington (ds), the album offers a thrilling blend of swing and beautiful ballads, including Kenny Barron’s energetic title track “And Then Again,” the standard “All the Things You Are,” and “Round Midnight,” offering a rich mix of thrilling swing and beautiful ballads. Speaking about the album, Charlap said, “This record captures the communication within the trio—what we’re doing individually and what we’re doing as a unit. We play our own way, but we don’t have to think too much about it. It should happen naturally, and I think it actually does. We train our minds and trust our hearts.” Regarding his current regular trio, which began in 1997, he added, “I remember the first time I saw Kenny [Washington]. His beautiful brushwork, along with Peter (Washington)’s sound, really brought the band to life. I remember us looking at each other. It was like slow motion and fast motion. It felt like, ‘What’s going on? This feels really good.’”
