Description:

This is a collection of works by Henri Wuertin, who was influential in transforming the technique and aesthetics of violin playing in the 19th century and was hailed as a master performer and composer and a worthy successor to Paganini. With the exception of the unfinished Violin Concerto No. 8, all of his works on this album were discovered after Wuertin's death. As is evident in several of the works heard here, he seemed to particularly enjoy the variation form, developing a single theme with emotion while developing the work as a place to demonstrate his virtuosity. Among his finest concert works are his Variations on a Theme from Beethoven's Romance No. 1 and the Bel Canto-influenced Fantasy in E major, "La Sentimentale". He completed a total of seven violin concertos, but the unfinished "No. 8" on this album is Wu-Tang's last work and was dedicated to his pupil Eugène Ysaÿe. Alexandre Markov, a violinist highly praised by Yehudi Menuhin, made his solo debut at Carnegie Hall at the age of 16 and has since performed with world-class conductors such as Lorin Maazel and Charles Dutoit. The repertoire ranges from 19th century Romantic music such as Paganini's "24 Caprices" to rock music.
