A French-Russian composer, Catoire (1861-1926) is known for several beautiful piano pieces. Although his style, which was strongly influenced by Wagner, was not accepted in Russia at the time, only Tchaikovsky is said to have recognized him as having "a strong creative talent. Although piano music was the main part of his works, he also left several violin pieces. The "Sonata No. 1" in particular is a work full of grandiose ideas and melodies. As the title "Poem" suggests, "Sonata No. 2," also in a single movement, has a dreamlike atmosphere, and is a charming sonata with a hint of French Impressionism. Recorded in Canada in 2015 by Lucense Cayalet (violin)/Stéphane Lemoulin (piano). (C)RS
