Around the 12th century, the Hanseatic League was an alliance of imperial free cities within the Holy Roman Empire that pledged allegiance directly to the emperor, and at its peak by the mid-14th century, more than 100 cities were members. Formed by commercial cities along the North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts and inland from northern Germany to Flanders in the west and present-day Poland, the Baltic states, and Russia in the east, this alliance declined in the 16th century, but the enormous wealth created by the Hanseatic empire was reflected in the magnificent cathedrals in various regions. This is a collection of church music, mainly Easter music, full of ingenuity written to fill the rich acoustics of this cathedral space.It includes a wide variety of pieces, including improvisations and works in which various composers have adapted the original score, such as "Christ has put me in the bonds of death," and enhanced the text. The performance is by the Netherlands-based Margareta Consort, established in 2009. The performance is by an elite group of players. Naxos Japan
