The quintessential performance is Bruckner No. 9. The recording on this disc is from 1955, prior to the EMI recording from 1961. The beauty of Schuricht's style has already been perfected, and the swooning song of the third movement and the mysterious eternity of the movement are irresistible. Schuricht himself was so satisfied with the performance that he later wrote a letter of thanks to the orchestra, and this is truly a treasured performance that will remain in the history of Vienna Philharmonic recordings.
