Schumann, Robert (1810-1856)

Description:

Berlin State Opera reopens after 7 years with a spectacular performance conducted by Barenboim with scenes from Schumann's "Goethe's Faust" with Roman Trakel singing Faust! The Berlin State Opera House was completed in 1743. Destroyed by air raids during World War II, it was rebuilt in the 1950s and is known as one of the leading opera houses in the former East Germany. In response to the aging facilities, a large-scale renovation began in 2010. The main points of renovation included the introduction of the latest stage mechanisms and the raising of the ceiling by 5 meters to improve acoustics, and the original budget of 230 million euros (about 31 billion yen) was increased to 400 million euros (about 53 billion yen), making it the talk of opera fans around the world. The long-awaited reopening was on October 3, 2017. The long-awaited reopening took place on October 3, 2017, the anniversary of German reunification, and Chancellor Angela Merkel attended the monumental performance. General Music Director Daniel Barenboim chose Robert Schumann's "Scenes from Goethe's Faust" as the program. This oratorio was composed based on the famous play "Faust" by Germany's greatest poet, Goethe. The content of "Faust" is so enormous that Schumann initially considered turning it into an opera, but instead he excerpted scenes from the original work and presented it as an oratorio in three parts. This time, the opera is staged with a production, and the scenes that Schumann did not compose are supplemented with dialogue by actors in the roles of Faust, Mephistopheles, and Grätchen, in addition to the singers, as a complement to the story. The singers are also magnificent, as befits an opening performance, with Roman Treichel as Faust, who has been a member of the Berlin State Opera since 1988. He has been a soloist at the Berlin State Opera since 1988, and was awarded the title of court singer in December 2000, making him one of the "stars" of the Berlin State Opera. Mephistopheles will be played by René Parpe, who has a strong presence, and Elsa Dreisig, a promising young German singer, will play the role of Grätchen. The production is directed by Jürgen Flimm, who was an attendant at the Berlin State Opera until March 2018, and the stage set is by Markus Ruppelt, a leading artist of the contemporary art movement known as German neo-expressionism.
