This is a collection of works written for two of the leading contemporary music ensembles, the Ensemble Modern and the SWR Vocal Ensemble, respectively. Both are world premiere recordings.
The three-part a capella work "Gold Gold" uses a sensuous text by Arno Holz (1863-1929), a representative of German naturalism and literary modernism, and the SWR Vocal Ensemble's flexible singing ability allows them to adapt to any complex layering of voices, and at times, like older religious vocal music, they can expand polyphonically to up to 24 voices. The "Body Korper," with 21 soloists, features a full complement of woodwinds, brass, and strings, including saxophone and keyboard. The orchestra is more like a "big band" than a chamber orchestra, with saxophones and keyboards. It is an attempt to explore the possibilities of big band sounds, dynamics, and rhythms using contemporary musical techniques, and is a work that looks at the materiality and objectivity of music.The overwhelming sound pressure at the climax, as well as the thin, delicate sound of the electrically treated strings, is truly impressive.
