This is the final release of "Mendelssohn: The Complete Symphonies", a project by Antonello Manacorda and the Kammerakademie Potsdam for Sony Classical, following the critically acclaimed 2011-15 recording of "Schubert: The Complete Symphonies". Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 2 "Hymn" is a "symphonic cantata" commissioned by the city of Leipzig for the 400th anniversary of the Gutenberg Bible in June 1840. As in the past, Manacorda employs period techniques for the string parts and ancient instruments for the brass, and builds his performance with attention to detail. The music always flows without losing its temporal relationship, as the skilled phrasing is built up and the sounds of the various instruments are heard, and explosive energy is emanated in the emotional upsurges. The fugue of the chorus at the end of the piece is also a masterpiece. However, the fortissimo swell is truly romantic. Conductor Antonello Manacorda was born in Turin, studied violin with Hermann Krebers and Franco Grilli, and founded the Mahler Chamber Orchestra with Claudio Abbado, serving as its concertmaster for eight years.He studied conducting under the renowned teacher Jorma Panula and as of 2018 is a very highly acclaimed conductor in Italian and German orchestras and opera houses.Since 2011, he has been the Chief Conductor of the Kammerakademie Potsdam.
