Includes many British works, such as Maxwell Davies' stunning magnum opus Simon Preston was not only a conductor specializing in choral music, but also a brilliant organist. Early in his career, Gramophone magazine described him as "a true messenger of the organ. Now Preston's solo organ recordings for Argo/Decca are all being released in a series of five titles. This 2-CD album is one of those titles, featuring organ music by 20th century composers. Preston was invited to Cirencester, Gloucestershire, in the spring of 1963, having just left King's College Cambridge, where he had been a paid organ student the previous summer. The music director at the town's Grammar School was Peter Maxwell Davies, who had made a name for himself as a sparkplug of postwar British music in the 1960s. Preston likewise oversaw the major choral organizations in England and helped raise the bar. Preston recorded Maxwell Davies' Fantasy, a large-scale work based on the medieval fixed melody "Oh Great Mystery.This work and project was a pioneer in music education, and the fantasy itself shows that the composer assembled the lengthy work with great skill. With the exception of one piece (Britten's Prelude and Fugue on a Theme by Vittoria), all of the pieces are being issued for the first time on CD by Decca. Universal Music/IMS
