Rediscovering Buried Masterpieces of 20th-Century Spanish String Quartets! This album is a noteworthy work that rediscovers the little-known lineage of string quartets in 20th-century Spanish music. The string quartet genre, which gradually took root in Spain from the late 19th century onward, underwent a unique evolution from the 1920s onward while intertwining with the trends of modern European music. This album introduces a diverse range of musical styles—from Impressionist techniques and Stravinskian rhythms to Neoclassicism and even postwar atonal writing—with a focus on composers associated with the “Group of Eight” (Grupo de los Ocho). The Seikilos String Quartet is one of Spain’s leading young ensembles today, formed in 2011 from the ranks of the Spanish National Youth Orchestra (JONDE). The members met at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid and honed their skills at prestigious music academies across Europe. Since resuming activities in 2018, the quartet has tackled a wide-ranging repertoire while actively working to rediscover 20th-century Spanish music. In 2021, they received the “Emerging Ensemble Award” at FestClasica, and in 2024, they were awarded the Leonardo Grant by the BBVA Foundation in recognition of their contribution to the revival of Spain’s musical heritage. In recent years, the ensemble has expanded its scope as a prominent chamber group, undertaking recording projects such as one dedicated to the works of Conrad del Campo and performing regularly at major music festivals and concert series throughout Spain.
