How avant-garde! An early work bursting with Markevich’s brilliant genius! A rare collection of orchestral works, the first since the Arnhem Philharmonic’s series in the 1990s! While Markevich’s recordings as a conductor are extremely popular, opportunities to hear his compositions are rare; however, four of his early orchestral works are now available in a new recording. The Piano Concerto, commissioned by Diaghilev, was premiered with the 17-year-old Markevich himself at the piano. It is brimming with sharp rhythms and vitality, clearly influenced by Stravinsky. The performance by the late Jonathan Powell—who sadly passed away in 2025—is a must-hear for its exceptional precision. The “Film Overture” was commissioned for the 1930 film *The Beautiful Blue Danube*, but the sound design—which even incorporated car horns and sirens—displeased the leading actress, and the piece was ultimately not used in the film. A nine-note motif layers upon itself, racing along at a breathtaking tempo. Markevich’s early works were described as being “made up of nothing but bones and muscles,” but around the time he married Nijinsky’s daughter, emotion and delicacy were added to his style. "Hymn to Love" and "Il Gran Lorenzo," based on a poem by Lorenzo de’ Medici, are filled with a sense of happiness and transparency that gives no hint of the shadow of war, set against the warm and peaceful atmosphere of Florence where he lived at the time; they are reminiscent of Ravel’s style and stand in stark contrast to his two previous works. Like Markevich, Johannes Kalitzke—who balances both composition and conducting—skillfully unravels the intricacies of the compositional technique, making this a must-listen. Tokyo M Plus
