The most sacred beauty of all: Fauré's Requiem performed by the King's College Choir of Cambridge! The prestigious King's College Choir of Cambridge and the Age of Enlightenment Orchestra are the splendid members of Fauré's Requiem. All soprano solos are also performed by male sopranos. Fauré's Requiem was performed in three manuscripts between 1888 and 1900. The first, the original "Madeleine manuscript," was performed at the actual ceremony in 1888 and consists of five pieces: Entrance Chorus and Kyrie, Sanctus, Piet Jesus, Agnus Dei, In Paradisum, solo soprano, chorus, viola, cello, double bass, harp, and organ. The second, the "1893 manuscript," is based on the 1888 version with the addition of a libretto and consecration, a baritone solo, and wind instruments (this manuscript is also widely known from a recording by Herreweghe (HMG.501292)). And the third, performed in 1900, is a manuscript with the same orchestration as is commonly performed today. This 1900 version was reluctantly extended by Fauré at the request of his publisher, and in recent years, various attempts have been made to perform the work in different manuscripts. This recording is based on a new revision by Marc Rigodiere.As it can be read from letters and other sources that Fauré was not very sympathetic to the content of the text, only the Hostias et preces tibi, where Fauré placed the musical pinnacle, is performed (as an addendum, the entire consecration, as revised by John Rutter, is also included). The orchestration conforms to that of the 1893 manuscript, rather than the larger 1900 version. Also included are the flowing Racine elegy and the Little Mass. The soprano solos are all sung by male sopranos who are also members of the choir, and the performance is marked by sacred beauty.
