Pizzi’s Beautiful Production Captured in HD! “Madama Butterfly” in Macerata The Sferisterio Opera Festival (commonly known as the Macerata Music Festival) in Macerata, Italy, is renowned for its ambitious initiatives among summer open-air opera festivals. Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly,” from the festival’s 2009 program, has now been released on video. Raffaella Angeletti, who plays Cio-Cio-San, is a soprano from Turin who has rapidly risen to prominence in recent years. She is so highly regarded that she has performed the role at the Vienna State Opera nearly every year since 2007. Massimiliano Pisapia, who plays Pinkerton, is also from Turin. As a Puccini tenor, he is already extremely popular in Germany and Italy (Dynamic has released a video of “La Bohème” from the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago, DYNDVD33564). In particular, Pinkerton is the role in which he made his debut; in fact, he has played Pinkerton in half of his performances over the past few years, making it his signature role. He also performed at the New National Theatre in Japan in 2009. Claudio Sgura, who plays Sharpless, is currently the most talked-about singer among the new generation of Verdi baritones. Born in Brindisi in 1974, his selection for the 2010 “Gala Domingo” is still fresh in our memories—he was highly praised for singing three roles, including Iago and Escamillo, opposite Domingo. Callegari’s conducting, which perfectly captures the essence of Italian opera, exquisitely brings together this ensemble of singers, each perfectly suited to their roles. Master director Pizzi personally oversaw the set and costume design, ensuring his aesthetic vision was fully realized.
