This video is a personal tribute to the renowned soprano Renée Fleming. She deeply loves the culture and atmosphere of Vienna during the era known as the “fin de siècle”—the late 1800s to the early 1900s. Vienna, the capital of Austria and the “City of Music” that boasted a rich cultural heritage, produced many musicians and cultural figures during this era. They would gather at cafés on the outskirts of Vienna, engaging in endless debates as they created new works. At night, they would attend concerts, enjoy magnificent operas, and further develop the breakdown of harmony that had its origins in Wagner. At the same time, the waltz was all the rage. It is no exaggeration to say that this was an era in which people found their purpose in life through hedonism, even as they could physically sense the approaching era of war. The diverse music born of such times is, without exception, sensuous and imbued with a dripping, alluring charm. The art songs included here all embody this atmosphere; each exudes a sense of bewitching allure, sweet idleness, and a faint hint of the temptation of death.
