Description:

A powerful performance of “Pastoral” by the Berlin Philharmonic, with Klemperer drawing out its formidable power, and more In May 1964, having successfully completed the famous recording sessions for *The Magic Flute* with EMI, Klemperer visited Berlin to perform in the inaugural season of the newly constructed, innovative concert hall, the “Philharmonie.” Klemperer, who had been nicknamed the “Volcano of the Tiergarten” (Tiergarten is a neighborhood near the Philharmonie) due to his intense activities during his tenure as director of the Kroll Opera in pre-World War II Berlin, first met the Berlin Philharmonic after the war in 1948 (Incidentally, his Berlin Philharmonic debut took place on April 16, 1921, at a Schoenberg concert, for which he held five rehearsals). The live recordings preserved from his subsequent collaborations with the orchestra are truly magnificent, even when listened to on pirated CDs with poor sound quality; in particular, an official release of his Beethoven recordings had long been eagerly awaited. The performance on May 31 featured here was a resounding success, receiving extensive coverage in the newspapers of the time. It is said that the articles by critics, who did not hold back in expressing their admiration, greatly wounded Karajan’s pride. About the Recording The recording was acquired from the Berlin Philharmonic through the tireless efforts of Stewart Brown, president of the Testament label. Even for a man renowned for his shrewd business acumen, this achievement is arguably second only to his acquisition of Knappertsbusch’s *Götterdämmerung*. The recording was made on May 31, 1964, at the Philharmonie by RIAS Berlin. However, following the station’s closure in 1994, the rights are now held by DeutschlandRadio, which is why the DeutschlandRadio logo appears on the cover. Incidentally, this performance was released quite some time ago by the Italian bootleg label HUNT, where it drew criticism for its incorrect data, incorrect pitch, and sound quality riddled with narrow dynamic range and distortion. The difference in sound quality compared to this new release is like night and day; in terms of the disparity in sound quality between this and the previously released version, it brings to mind the case of Testament’s complete Brahms cycle featuring Toscanini and the Philharmonia.
