A leader album by Panamanian drummer Daniel Villarreal Featuring Anna Butterss and Jeff Parker! This album, Lados B, captures an improvised session by drummer Daniel Villarreal, guitarist Jeff Parker, and bassist Anna Butterss. Recorded over two days on October 15 and 16, 2020, in the backyard of Chicali Outpost in Los Angeles, this session marked the trio’s first in-person gathering in nearly seven months following the hiatus caused by the pandemic. While this album is connected to some of the material from the highly acclaimed Panama77 (2022), it primarily delves deeply into previously unreleased recordings. Daniel Villarreal leads the improvisation by presenting diverse rhythmic structures, drawing on his Latin funk sensibility and hypnotic grooves. Meanwhile, Parker and Butters, drawing on the mutual understanding cultivated through their past collaborations, take on the role of supporting fluid melodies within highly free-form improvisations. As a result, this album stands as a vivid document of collective creativity emerging against a backdrop of historical constraints and moments of liberation.
