As the title *HIPPIES, THUGS, AND HEROES* suggests, this album features a collection of narrative-driven songs depicting a variety of characters—from old friends and his former self, evoked from his subconscious, to fictional figures. Based on demos Thompson crafted at home, the album was recorded in a style close to a live performance—requiring only 2 to 4 takes—with a total of more than 10 musicians, including longtime band members Michael Jerome (drums/percussion) and Taras Prodaniuk (bass), David Mansfield (guitar/fiddle), who joined the band for this album, and his wife, Zara Phillips (backing vocals)—a total of over 10 musicians—in a manner that was almost like a live performance, with each track recorded in just 2 to 4 takes. As evident from the production process, the album reflects the band’s current vitality and momentum as a live act, as well as Thompson’s strong sense of identity, which he takes great pride in.
