The Grateful Dead

Description:

In July of 1966, the Grateful Dead were still a relatively new band. They’d been playing live for just a little over a year (changing their name from the Warlocks a few months in), gigging around the greater San Francisco area as they found their psychedelic blues sound. Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, CA, 7/3/66 is one of the earliest live recordings of the band, captured by Owsley “Bear” Stanley, who would go on to work with the band as an engineer and concert recorder for many years to follow. Even in this germinal phase, the Grateful Dead are still a force to contend with on 7/3/66, exhibiting an early look at the group interplay, improvisational curiosity, and dynamic approach to live performance that would only evolve from there. The set is filled with covers and blues workouts, including a heavy rendition of Junior Parker’s “Next Time You See Me,” a slow-burning and organ-heavy second set ramble through Johnny “Guitar” Watson’s “Gangster of Love,” as well as lighter fare like Motown and folk-rock numbers. There are also a few early Grateful Dead originals, most notably Pigpen’s down-and-dirty blues romper “Tastebud,” the Phil Lesh-penned psych-out “Cardboard Cowboy” (a song that fits in nicely with the mystical Bay Area psych sounds of that year), and Jerry Garcia’s rude rocker “Cream Puff War.” All of these originals show signs of what the band would grow into, as does the set-closer “In the Midnight Hour,” where they stretch out for almost 16 minutes, riffing on a simple form and landing somewhere between party band and nascent jam band. The snapshot of the Grateful Dead on Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, CA, 7/3/66 is one of a work in progress, the band loose and scruffy as they run through their repertoire, and especially raw sound quality enhancing that scruffiness. While this version of the band is already electric and fun, 7/3/66 also shows seeds of a future depth that was on the way, embodied by what sometimes feels like a restlessness on the band’s part to push these songs a little further than what had been done before. Even so early in what would go on to become one of the longer, stranger trips in rock & roll history, the Grateful Dead were eager to advance forward at full speed into the unknown. ~ Fred Thomas
