Description:
Hiromi Uehara also makes a guest appearance! The highly anticipated new album by New York’s No. 1 saxophonist, Laxia Benjamin, makes its debut on ARTWORK Records. Born and raised in New York, she studied under Billy Harper and Gary Barts at the New School for Music. She has garnered attention for her sound that blends jazz, funk, and R&B, and has performed with artists such as Missy Elliott, Alicia Keys, Stevie Wonder, and Gregory Porter. She is a prodigious talent who has released albums such as *Pursuance: The Coltranes*—a tribute to Coltrane’s works—as well as the 2023 album *Phoenix* (nominated for three Grammy Awards) and *Phoenix Reimagined*, and boasts a total of six Grammy nominations. Following *Phoenix*—which marked her comeback after a near-fatal car accident—and the 2025 Grammy-nominated single “Noble Rise,” her latest album, *We Dream*, reflects a shift in perspective: “Can we become a light in the darkness?” Selecting artists capable of reconstructing the language of music through evolution and innovation rather than mere ornamentation, the members of her “Avengers”—as she calls them—include Terence Blanchard, Chris Potter, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Hiromi Uehara, Black Thought (The Roots), and Bilal. The album progresses from the spoken-word piece “First Light” to “Beyond the Dawn,” featuring Terence Blanchard, creating a tone where meditation and awakening intersect. It is a powerful artistic statement marked by high-energy improvisation.
