Experience the Charm of the “Musette,” Beloved at Court During the Reign of Louis XIV The musette is a French bagpipe with a delicate and elegant sound; it is often described as the “bagpipe of classical music.” Thanks to the patronage of Louis XIV, it gained popularity at court and was widely used by composers, performers, and instrument makers seeking the favor of royalty and the nobility. By the mid-18th century, it had become an integral part of French culture—featured in court settings, salons, and theater music—and was played by a wide range of people, from amateurs to virtuosos. However, it disappeared after the French Revolution, and it wasn’t until the 1960s that it began to attract attention once again. This album focuses on the musette, with its unique timbre, and showcases its rich sound in combination with the Baroque flute, Baroque cello, and harpsichord. Period instruments are used in the performances, and the musette’s sophisticated technique and charm are fully demonstrated through masterpieces by Boismortier, Nord, Dupuy, and others.
