The closing concert “SOUNDOFHISTORY-since1923-,” performed by Char prior to the venue’s closure, has been released on video. The release captures the one-night-only live performance, which featured renowned contemporary guitar hero Mateus Asato alongside musicians from around the world. Furthermore, the limited edition includes footage from the 2024 concert “For another 100 years,” which also featured CHAR’s longtime collaborator, Reiichi Nakai-do CHABO, making this a collection that allows viewers to enjoy two concerts set at the Hibiya Open-Air Concert Hall, each spanning a different time period. Hibiya Open-Air Concert Hall is one of Japan’s most iconic music venues. Since its opening in 1923 as Japan’s first full-scale open-air concert hall, countless artists have left their mark on its legendary stage, making it a veritable “Rock Hall of Fame.” In 2023, the year of its 100th anniversary, it was announced that the venue would be closed for renovation; however, it has now been decided that it will bring its long history to a close at the end of September 2025. Now, a video compilation capturing every moment of the closing party “SOUNDOFHISTORY—since 1923—,” produced by Char—who has deep ties to the Hibiya Open-Air Concert Hall—will be released on Tuesday, June 9, 2026. Char and the Open-Air Concert Hall—their relationship has resonated time and again over the course of a career spanning more than half a century. Ever since Char, then still a teenager, took the stage with Smoky Medicine—featuring Mari Kaneko, Yoshihiro Naruse, Shoji Fujii, and Jun Sato—this special venue has hosted countless performances, including the legendary rock trio Johnny, Louis & Char set a record attendance of 14,000 people at the free “Free Spirit” concert in July 1979, as well as the JL&C disbandment concert—it is a special venue where he has performed countless times. This “Sound of History—since 1923—” is a work that thoroughly documents the authentic final performance held at the Open-Air Concert Hall before its renovation. A highlight of this production is the collaboration with an all-star lineup of musicians who traveled from all over the world to perform. Mateus Assato (Brazil), a modern guitar hero who has garnered immense support from guitarists worldwide for his exceptional technique and musical expression; Josh Smith (USA), who has gained popularity for his style that blends a bluesy sound with elements of jazz, funk, and country; Pum Viprit (Thailand), a singer-songwriter and Thailand’s first international star whose song “LoverBoy” became a global hit; and Poch Barrett (Philippines), known as the guitarist for Ben&Ben—the Philippines’ national band with over 10 million monthly plays on Spotify—all make appearances.
